A Mascot GFlo™ – Globe Control Valve installed at a major thermal power station was examined after a recent industrial fire affected the surrounding area. Site engineers conducted a detailed post-fire inspection to assess the condition of the valve and its mounted equipment.

The fire caused extensive thermal damage to the positioner, air filter regulator, solenoid valve, limit switches, junction box, instrument tubing and wiring. The inspection, however, found that the valve’s primary pressure-containing assembly had retained its mechanical integrity.

Inspection findings

To verify the operating condition of the valve, the fire-damaged accessories were bypassed and instrument air was supplied directly to the actuator.

The actuator responded normally, and the valve completed its operating stroke satisfactorily. The pressure-containing body, bonnet and actuator assembly also remained structurally sound despite prolonged exposure to severe heat.

The inspection established that the mounted instrumentation and accessories had sustained extensive damage, while the primary valve assembly remained operational.

Before the valve is considered for return to service, Mascot has recommended replacing all soft sealing components and carrying out hydrostatic pressure testing of the pressure-containing parts as part of good engineering practice.

One final engineering observation

The valve involved in this incident was not specified or supplied as a Fire Safe Control Valve.

However, like every Mascot GFlo™ – Globe Control Valve, it was manufactured with encapsulated body gaskets and an encapsulated packing design as standard features.

These inherent design characteristics contribute to maintaining the integrity of the valve’s primary pressure boundary and stem sealing under severe thermal conditions.

The post-fire inspection findings reflect Mascot’s long-standing engineering philosophy of designing products with inherent mechanical robustness for demanding process applications.
